How to Find Comments by Username on a YouTube Video

Want to see everything one person said under a video? Here's how to filter a video's comments and replies by username, and what to do if you're looking for your own comments.

Sometimes you don't care what was said so much as who said it. Maybe a creator replied to a few people under their own video and you want to read all of their answers. Maybe someone left a long, useful thread of comments and you want to see every one of them together. Or maybe you're a moderator checking what a particular account has been posting.

YouTube doesn't let you filter a comment section by person. Our Comment Search tool does, and this guide shows you how.

Step 1: Load the video's comments

Go to the Comment Search page, paste the video's link and press Load comments.

Every comment and reply loads automatically, which matters for a username search: people often say the most interesting things deep inside reply threads, and you can only filter what has been loaded. The progress bar shows you how far through it is.

Step 2: Turn on username matching

Once the comments appear, look under the search box for the option Also search usernames and tick it. Now whatever you type is matched against the commenter's display name as well as the text of their comment.

Step 3: Type the username

Type all or part of the name, with or without the @. A few tips:

  • Use a distinctive part of the name. Searching chef on a cooking video will match lots of comments that mention chefs. Searching chefmaria92 will only match that person.
  • Switch the drop-down to "Comments and replies". This is the setting most people miss. With it on, the tool looks inside every reply thread and shows each parent comment with that person's replies underneath it.
  • Sort by Oldest to read someone's comments in the order they posted them, which makes a back-and-forth conversation much easier to follow.

Step 4: Visit their channel

Every username in the list is a link. Click it to open that person's channel on YouTube in a new tab. That's handy for checking whether an account is the real creator or an impersonator, since impersonators often copy the name and picture but not the handle.

Tip: Creators' own comments are worth searching for on tutorials and product reviews. They often pin corrections, updated links or answers to common questions in the replies rather than in the video description.

Finding your own old comments

If you're trying to find comments you posted, there's a better way than searching video by video. YouTube keeps a full list of your comments in your Google account:

  1. While signed in, open YouTube and go to History.
  2. Choose Comments under "Manage all history" (on some versions it's in My Activity โ†’ Other activity โ†’ YouTube comments).
  3. You'll see every comment you've posted, newest first, with a link to the video it was on.

Once you know which video it was, you can come back to the Comment Search tool to see the replies people left you, sorted and searchable.

Why can't I search all of YouTube for one person's comments?

YouTube doesn't make that information available to other people or to tools like ours, for privacy reasons. You can search every comment on one video at a time, and you can see all of your own comments in your account, but not everything someone else has written across the whole site.

Common questions

The person changed their name. Will the old name match? No. Comments always show the commenter's current name, so search for the name they use now.

Why do I see some results that aren't from that person? With "Also search usernames" on, a comment matches if the word appears in the name or the text. If other people mention the person by name, they'll show up too. Using a longer, more unique part of the username fixes this.

Does it work on Shorts? Yes. Paste the Shorts link just like a regular video.

Ready to try it? Head to Comment Search, load a video and tick Also search usernames.
